Scout Volunteers from all over the nation representing each region and many of our partnering organizations gathered for their annual National Sea Scout Committee Meeting last weekend. The Big Ideas that guided the meeting were Membership Growth, New Units, Fun Monthly Maritime Activities, and Inspiring Annual Summer Cruising. The National Sea Scout Boatswain Edward Campbell was in attendance to represent Sea Scouts from all over the country and Gary Butler, the Deputy Chief Scout Executive, attended to provide guidance on the pending national resolution that could make Sea Scouts an independent program of the BSA.

Some of the highlights from the meeting are below for your reference. You can expect to hear about each of these items in more detail in the coming months.

  • The 2016 Printing of the Sea Scout Manual was approved, including updated advancement requirements.
  • The Small Boat Handler Award was revised to include on the water requirements.
  • A National Strategic Plan Strategy Map and Committee Charter was approved.
  • The National Organization of Sea Scout Alumni was established.
  • The National Quartermaster Sea Scout Association was established as a Sub-Group of the National Organization of Sea Scout Alumni.
  • The Order of the Arrow pocket flap was authorized for wear on the New Century Universal Uniform.

Many other initiatives are very close to completion and will be announced following the January National Sea Scout Committee Teleconference.
